I’m looking for the most all-around functional/versatile carry-on bag for travel by public transport (plane, train, bus). I’ve used convertible backpacks and duffle bags, and rolling luggage (some with backpack straps), but have always run into compromises. My top priorities are:
– Maximum carry on size (under-packing is easier than over stuffing)
– Load bearing pack straps (hip belt) worthy of a long hike
– Wheels worthy of rough sidewalks and cobblestone
– Heavy duty/protected zippers (first point of failure on my bags are exposed zippers on grounded surfaces, and weak main zippers from over-stuffing)
– Durable/protection from gorilla baggage handlers (in case I need to check)
– Detachable daypack would be a nice option (although I’d probably default to my EDC bag)
– Budget open for functionality, not into $$$ for bling though.
For the record, I just bought an Osprey Meridian 22″ 60L yesterday (to lock in a good holiday sale price), and got a long look at the Osprey Ozone 22″ 50L – both about the best I’ve seen, but I haven’t been shopping long. Tags are still on, so I can return if anyone can point to a better option.
Look forward to reading your opinions.
