After seeing the copper tags that were posted by thefrank, I started searching the web and came across some copper tags made from copper pipe. This got me thinking and here is what I was able to get done on my first attempt.
I had a piece of standard plumbing, thin wall copper pipe that was cut out of a cold water line because of a pin hole leak.
I cut the pipe all the way through with a metal saw.
I then pried the pipe open with a large screw drive and pliers until it was open enough to form a rough sheet.
I then hammered it flat and gave it a light polishing.
I was able to get three sheets of copper plate from the pipe about 1 inch wide and almost 2 inches long.
I then drilled a keyring hole, files, and sanded the edges so that they would not be sharp. I also gave it a final polishing with 800, then 1000 grit sandpaper followed by some flitz metal polish.
And finally, used some metal letter punches that I have.
To give you an idea about size, here is the ID tag on my work keys.
It took a total of about 1/2 of a day for me to complete this. So not really a lot of time. I am saving the other 2 copper pieces since I am not sure what I want to use the for yet. Overall, I am very happy the way the ID tag came out. Especially since I have never tried a project like this before. I’m sure that there are a lot of people on this forum that, given the same material, could turn out some spectacular tags!
