I bought the 2.0 version only a month ago because I couldn’t wait for the new version. I pre-ordered it when it came out and just received it. How does the new version compare? Here are some notes and pictures:

    1. The new version is slightly bigger, which is important because the 2.0 version does not fit a 13 inch MacBook Pro very well. The new one is about half an inch wider, and it makes a big difference.
    2. The strap is different — the new one’s padding seems fuller. It is hard to describe, but there seems to be more material inside the padded area.
    3. The handle on the main strap is gone. I have never used that handle — if I need to grab the strap, I just grab the strap. So the removal make sense.
    4. The velcro loops on the side of the strap, presumably for a hydration hose, are also gone. Instead the bag comes with several grey velcro loops that can be used in place. As I am not going to use a hydration pouch, I like this change.
    5. The CCW back pocket opens wider. This is a welcoming change as it is much easier to put things (like an iPad) into that pocket.
    6. The cross body strap design has changed. The part that attach to the main strap is now a grey material. It looks strange. The end that attaches to the bottom corner of the bag has a strange fastener, instead of a standard plastic strap buckle. The good thing about this change is that after taking off the cross body strap, the bottom corner of the bag now has a small loop of webbing instead of a webbing with a buckle at the end.
    7. My cross body strap has a strange section in the middle — it has two elastic layers and one normal webbing layer, resulting in a permanent bulge (see photo). I am not sure if this is a manufacturing error or something else.
    8. The color of the “buttons” has changed from black to grey. I think the grey button looks more plastic (they are plastic). I prefer the old black ones.
    9. The vanquest logo is smaller for some reason. It is about 1 cm narrower.
    10. The bottom of the new version has two rows of molle webbing. The old one has a plain bottom.
    11. The two plastic key lanyard hooks are different. The new ones are flimsier, and slightly smaller. I used to be able to hook a small carabiner into the old version. It cannot fit into the new one. The “spring” part of the new hook is very thin — I can see it breaking soon.
    12. The new bag ships with several grey velcro loops that can be use to tie down ends of webbings.
    13. The new bag does not ship with any shock cord for the front of the bag. The loops for the shock cord are also sewn in slightly different positions around the front. Since there are two pockets in the front, I think everyone remove the shock cord once they get their bags. So not having it is not a big deal, but it would be nice to have it included just in case.

    Picture in the next post.
