KeymasterPreface: If anyone who uses icloud for any reason on their phone/ipad and didn’t already know hackers have exploited the cloud and can hold your device ransom. Initially reported in Australia last week it has also appeared in the US now.
Anyway, has anyone followed today’s announcements? What do you think of the changes for iOS 8? About time, not really beneficial for you, or you typically Jaibreak your device so no concern either way?
I’ll insert the replies for Android users here: 5 years too late, LOL so much for not hackable, I’ve had that on my phone that’s 1/3rd the price. BLAH blah blah. I have a second line running a Nexus 4, so no fan boy of a specific platform here, just covering the bases of conversation for these type threads.

KeymasterI’m really looking forward to the integration with osx. I’m glad they opened up iCloud to bring it in line with Dropbox, and the prices for their extended storage plans look good.
Yeah, it can be argued that a chunk of if not all was doable with android if you tried to set it up, but I think Apples solution will be idiot proof and relatively painless to adopt.
I’m quite excited for Apple’s new keyboard, as well as opening up the environment to utilize 3rd party keyboards. I’ve missed SwiftKey.

KeymasterI think those are all good prospects too. The fact they have taken key features from various platforms like Whatsapp, snapchat, etc and integrated into their own is a positive step they are listening to what people want more and more finally. The other important thing, “copying” these other apps or not it forces android to keep developing to stay ahead and that benefits everyone long-term regardless of platform.
I hope I can get a beta copy to test. It was a nice preview being able to do so with 7 last summer and have a jump start on everyone else.

KeymasterI picked up an Android this time around, Galaxy Note 2. I don’t use 90% of the features including the pen.
I more than likely buy another iphone this time around once it is known what they will look like.
I O/S never gave me any trouble and is simple to use.January 22, 2026 at 9:35 am #147382admin
KeymasterI’d heard about the hacks – the hackers are counting on people to use the same password in multiple places – they get email addresses and passwords from elsewhere then try them out at apple, if it works they lock you out of your own iphone/ipad unless you pay them. best defense is to have a different password for your phone/pad than everything else.

KeymasterApple’s OS is not as secure as many believe. I am a Windows user with three home PCs and my wife and I both use Android OS phones.
Microsoft’s OneDrive is our cloud storage choice. Easy to use and to date secure.
We make a point of not storing any documents with personal identifying data in the cloud. For such documents we use a USB connected external hard-drive, that has a password different from all others in use. When this drive is not being used for backup or file exchange the drive is powered off. When we are away for more than a day the usb plug is disconnected from the PC,
As inconvenient as it is to use, remember a number of different passwords the current state of internet security means that for ones own personal data security, multiple passwords are now required.
Multiple passwords along with at least two good security software packages do keep most computers safe.

KeymasterI use 1password to manage mine. Everything has 20+ characters of gibberish upper and lower case, numbers and symbols. Impossible to remember, a pain in the :censored: to crack.

KeymasterAre you looking at the 4.7 or the waiting to see the reported 5.5 to be released at end of the year?

KeymasterThe were fortunate early on because the limited amount of computers using their stuff were small compared to windows and not really worth the time to generate malicious software for since its a numbers game to catching an unsuspecting user or exploitable device. Obviously that’s changed with the adoption of their computers in business thanks in part to the acceptance of their phone and integration of their entire ecosystem once the Ipad was introduced.
I never took it for granted and figured it was only a matter of time. Maybe still better off than PC in some aspects, but definitely not perfect by any means.
I adopted Lastpass (with a 20 character password of its own) which offers the same thing. Always run the maximum password length allowed by the site when possible and the various character types accepted as you noted. Plus they make for another great bookmark source if your computer goes down or you are traveling.January 22, 2026 at 9:36 am #147387admin
KeymasterYeah, the tools are out there, if only more people would use them… I wasn’t always so security minded, but after a couple of fraudulent charges to my debit card a few years back (which my credit union promptly refunded, no questions asked) I opted to double down on my online security. It is/was a bit of a chore to track down and change everything, but it’s been smooth sailing since. The $50-60 I paid for 1password licenses across all my devices (they run sales quite frequently) was well worth it. It even has a built in feature now that lets me know when a site I use has recently been compromised so I can change passwords proactively. I also thoroughly enjoy the fact that I can export an encrypted “vault” of all my passwords to a flash drive that can be run from any computer, even without the program installed, so that my accounts would still be accessible in a worse case scenario.

KeymasterNone of the announcements from WWDC were stunners but I saw lots of little things that impressed me. Above all, Mac OS X 10.10 looks better than any release before it to me. I love the new design. Jony Ive dumped all the skeuomorphism. 😀
