KD0VMJ. Do you guys carry a handheld 2M in your EDC? I have a cheap Baofeng uv-5r but I’m looking for something with better quality that I could incorporate in a ham radio to-go bag. My Maxpedition Fatty is overloaded!

Hey fellow 0 lander!
I carry a Yaesu VX-7 and VX-3 almost always in my Moab 10.
Both with AA Battery packs and several reloads of Energizer Lithium AA’s. They also both have supposedly high gain antennas compared to the stock dummy load style models.
I also carry a speaker mike for one of them most of the time.I also have VX-5s and VX-150s that I can do the same with and I have 2 of each so I can always have at least one working or can hand one to someone else and be able to tell them how it works from experience.
This has proven helpful many times.
I also often carry a battery replacement pack that can plug into a lighter outlet and a small amplifier and mag mount larger antenna depending on my destination.
I also carry a standard Mobile radio in an ammo can with battery and knocked down antenna a lot.
Ham is just fun and so is the gear!

Still thinking about it. I took a Technician class practice test the other day, completely cold and got 88%. I guess 30 years in telecomm and electronics has taught me something. 🙂
Not really interested in HAM as a hobby, I have enough of those. But I can see how it could come in handy during an emergency.
I used to be KD5QHI but let it lapse. I might wabt to get it back
