First aid stations/boxes absolutely terrify me. Most people don’t access them unless they need a Band-Aid, and because of the whole “I’m not getting involved” philosophy, most people are forced to access the FAS for themselves, while trying to manage whatever level of blood loss they are experiencing.
What I do to reduce the chances of cross contamination is this:
I get those small plastic sealable bags that drug dealers like so well. In each of the bags, I put:
1 iodine wipe
1 alcohol prep pad
1 4X4 sterile pad
1 Band-Aid
At the first aid station, I use a clip with a magnetic back, and clip one bag to the side of the station, so that if someone is bleeding, they don’t have to fumble with opening the first aid station, and digging through three or four compartments to find what they need. If I walk past the FAS and see the bag is gone , I just replace it.
I also keep a couple on my person, and use them/give them out to people with minor boo-boos.
If you want to see a smile on a parent’s face, walk up to them and hand them one the packages when their child has fallen and scraped their knee at the playground…
