KeymasterSo i am in need of a new unnecessarily complex digital piece of paper to tell me (read; the wife) how to go from a to b. I used to have a TomTom but gravity killed that one quite some time ago and i have been using mobile-phone navigation ever since. I have finally had enough of that tho so i am looking for a standalone unit that i can use hiking, biking and a little bit of kayaking.
The garmin 62 and 64 series caught my eye but the only way ill be able to sell this to the missus is if it also does turn by turn navigation just like our old tom-tom did so she can also use it in the car and on her motorcycle. I have seen some youtube videos on the device (tho those are mainly on outdoorsy stuff where i know this unit will do just fine) and the City Navigator maps and iย thinkย the little handheld would do just fine routing from address to address but i’d like to hear from someone here who has some actual experience on this subject.
So tldr; Will these units be able to function as a fully fledged turn by turn navigation devices for every day use on the road/in cities? Think lane suggestions, decent time estimations, easy to find gas-stations on-route etc.

KeymasterI have a Garmin GPS for the car; older generation: Nuvi 1300. Mine came with eternal map updates which in many ways is a key feature to ensure navigation capabilities.
I have found it to be very reliable and versatile. I even have it on when driving on the expressway around here; particularly in rush hours. Which in our case (I live in greater metro Washington DC), is practically all day on the ‘ring roads’ encircling DC. Many is the time that the Garmin will tell me to get off the expressway; puts me on surface roads and then back on — getting me past an obstruction due to accident or construction.
Mine does not do a great job advising on lane changes unless they are static — having to do with which lane for an exit under ‘normal’ circumstances. If it is advising me to take an exit so as to route me past a traffic jam, then it is not so good. Often I cannot take ‘Ms. Nuvi’s’ advice because I cannot transition in time across jammed lanes of traffic…
Other than the last point, I’m quite happy with the unit. Possibly newer models are programmed to give advice further in advance?
L’chaim!

KeymasterThe important question here is… what kind of motorcycle does the wife ride.?
(sorry, no GPS experience here, getting lost is a lot more interesting)

Fazer fs6 s2. Great ride but it had to be lowered front and back because she’s kinda tiny… So i can’t really throw the thing around like i want because I’ll just end up driving the stand, footpegs and engine block into the ground every corner i take. But then again it’s her bike ๐September 29, 2025 at 10:53 am #27573admin

I assume you mean the FZ6 (unless they call it something different over there). If so, very nice! Kinda’ like an R6 with better ergonomics. I’m a big fan of Yamahas.September 29, 2025 at 10:53 am #27574admin
KeymasterOh yeah, FZ6, my bad ๐ Ergonomics sure were great yeah, till the missus replaced that darned suspension….
Btw, i went ahead and bought the gps in question….. tomorrow ill take it out on a bicycle ride to see how it works!
Its one of these in case anyone is wondering;

Dumped a whole lot of maps on her and initial impressions playing with it form the couch is that it should do an ok job at routing…. Will know more tomorrow :bounce: -
