I’m in need of a new business laptop for work. I have had a Lenovo X series since 2012 and it is on it’s last leg. Overall I was happy with it and would have no problem getting another Lenovo. I recentlyworked on a cheap Dell INspiron and was impressed so I am open to getting a Dell.

So, my question is for you tech guys out there. Would you recommend a Dell Latitude or a Lenovo Thinkpad? The Lenovo is about $100 more expensive as I have it spec’d out.

Important factors: keyboard, battery life, trackpad.

I think both of those are good options. I used to support Latitudes. If they are as reliable as they were then, it is a good option. But the Thinkpad is a really great option from what I understand. Everyone I’ve ever talked to who has used them swears by them, and they are the only option my school gives to buy through the school (for guaranteed support).

But honestly, I bet it doesn’t matter too much. I have a Lenovo right now, and I’ve had a pretty good experience with it. Not a ThinkPad, though (Yoga 2 Pro).

I’m assuming you’re an attorney. I am too. Do you use the yoga 2 for business?

Never supported a large amount of Lenovos, but never had what few I did fail. Buddy of mine works in a Lenovo office and claims about a 5% precent failure rate over a 3-year lease. Thats about the same as my experience with Dell.

So by looking at your important factors, it will probably be safe just to pick the one you like more. Battery life listings are a joke so don’t go too much by them. Instead look at options that consume power and how they are power managed. Example – Backlight Keyboard? Can it be dimmed, disabled or does it have an auto-off feature?

I am actually only a law student. But I do use the laptop for everything I do for school, which I imagine is at least somewhat similar. It will handle a lot of open Lexis Nexis/WestLaw tabs in Chrome, for instance.

The battery life is the only thing I am less happy about, since it is not that long. I don’t know how much more reliable the Thinkpad’s battery is than the Yoga line (which is like the equivalent of the IdeaPad line, which is the consumer version of the Thinkpad. Or something?).

I would probably use this for business, though. Windows 8.1 has been very reliable, and it runs everything I would need. I have the version with 8 GB RAM and an i7, and it will run games and other kinds of resource-hog software very well.

My wife has just got the Lenovo think pad t450s through her work and I’m thinking about getting one too. Apparently it’s milspec as well which is nice, has a drain from the keyboard in case you spill something on it. Keyboard was tested by dropping ball bearings from a meter above for 90 mins I think I read. So it sounds like it can take a hammering. Not sure about the trackpad yet but I haven’t had a chance to play around with the settings. Isn’t the best looking thing in the world but does the job. I like that you can dock it to an external battery which makes it last 15 hours??

    dragonbeat,

I’d be very interested in hearing your observations and comments on the T450s. I’ve been having an internal discussion about the laptop that I want to purchase in the near future. I run Windows everyday, but I’m familiar with UNIX as well. So, I thought about getting an Apple MBP (a mid-priced model). Having a heterogeneous-computing household has its challenges I suppose, but if I do get a Windows-based laptop, I don’t want one of those $500 plastic things. I want durability and reliability so a corporate-spec laptop would be more to my liking.

My company was purchased recently, and the company that purchased us gave everyone Dell Latitudes. I forget the model, as I rarely use it, as I prefer my desktop server. So, the Dell vs Lenovo comparison was already something I was considering.

Sorry for being along-winded, but any thoughts you have going forward would be appreciated. I did see one review of the Lenovo and the only “negative” in the review was an observation that the display was not as bright as the reviewer wold have liked.

I have a Lenovo t440sand like it enough. The build quality and keyboard are very good. If you go with Lenovo stick with the Thinkpad business line and stay away from the other consumer end products. Several years ago Lenovo was caught installing hidden tracking software in the consumer line. Not a good thing for a Chinese owned company.

Well having seen some of the “torture” videos done on YouTube to the t450s it seems like and awesome laptop. I’ve seen maybe a gallon of water and wine poured on the keyboard and it still fires up and works. Some woman put it in a freezer for 2 hours and it still fired up no problem. She even put it in an oven for maybe an hour at 200 degrees and after leaving it for half an hour it still fired up although there was warping to the bezel of the monitor. There’s drop tests an apparently there’s an accelerometer inside that measures if it is being dropped and automatically shuts down the hard drive.

Although if you’re thinking of getting the t450s it might be worth noting that the t460s is coming out this month, updated higher resolution screen etc etc but that might bring prices down of the 450.

Both my son and daughter have Lenovo think-pads through their school. My son’s has had a failed motherboard, and the battery has had to be replaced twice, My daughter’s has had no problems.

I just think they seem a little basic.

My brother has two dell laptops he has had no problems with.

I had a dell desktop than ran almost nonstop for seven years.

I have no experience with dell, but lenovo customer service is excellent, as long as you have a proof of guarantee. very friendly, no complications, fast. i had 4 android tablets with issues – all 4 were exchanged fast and with no problems.

I’m an HP guy and work for an HP shop. But… A lot of our vendors use Lenovo’s and I like what I seen of them. I have had a couple of Latitudes in the past. They worked well for what I was doing. But since I don’t game, and my most used applications on all of them have been AutoCAD, Excel, RSLogix 500/5000, and GX Developer that’s not much of a test.

I am an IT manager for a small company for 50ish employee’s. We run 99% Dell 0.5% Lenovo and 0.5% Apple.

Only issues with Dell is bad battery, failed fan. This was for about 26 laptops and over my current 4 yrs at the company. Support is fantastic. Never had an issue.
Currently have an X1 carbon and no issue so far. Support is pretty bad.
Our ceo runs a macbook air. No issues what so ever. I own a couple of Apple laptops myself. Always rock solid and apple care is well worth it.
