Hi guys, I’m looking for handheld gps with a large color screen. Use would be for finding local trails, day hikes and over nighters. I would like a simple interface.

Any info on where to get the best prices and other online bst forums to buy used would be great.

I dont want to drop more than 200.00, I hope.

If anyone has one to trade I have knives listed in the bst.

    Thanks guys!

Garmin is the standard I judge all GPS’s by. $200 gets you in the door but not much in the way of extras. Take a look at the eTrex series.

Garmin 60CSX. It has a fairly large color screen. I’ve owned one for years and would recommend it. I think that you can find it – used -around the price you’ve stipulated. It has been discontinued. Understand that units like this come with “base maps”. Deailed street maps of a region would need to be purchased separately.

There is a newer model (which replaced the 60CSx) called the 64S, which receives GLONASS as well as NAVSTAR and also includes Bluetooth. This seems to be around your price range as well. Keep in mind the memory module and street/topo map costs as well. Syntaxerrorsix is correct that Garmin is and pretty much has always been at the top of the consumer GPS Rx market. The company can be a bit infuriating at times (IMHO) but their products are great.

Hmm… the 64s looks really nice! I’ve never used this model but it looks really cool!

so, you have 2 alternatives there

For your purposes, I don’t think a dedicated GPS is your best choice. Rather, a good app for a smartphone will give you better screen and for much less. On Android, I’m a fan of Backcountry Navigator. Cost is about $12.00. Spend some of your excess planned budget for an SD card for extra storage, a robust case for your phone and a portable charger to extend your battery life.

Should be similar options for Apple. I just don’t know the specifics there.
