KeymasterI have 1 battery pack that I know I can use and charge at the same time.
9Ah. But only charges at 1A in and 1.5A out. So isn’t always useful.I have a bunch or battery packs that are 10AH, but I can only use them or charge them, not both at the same time.
For those that come across battery packs that can be used and charged at the same time this could be useful to know, because when the device is full or near full the battery pack either continues to fill or as the device starts to slow charge, you get more capacity for use later in the battery pack.
This can be useful for flights when you have limited time at some chargers in the airport, and then move off to the plane after a layover but you can’t get a full charge but you want to fill as much as possible while you have access to power.
Or charge the phone, while on power but want to move away from the charger once a call comes in for privacy but leave the battery pack still charging.
Post details of the Chargers if you can.

KeymasterPass through charging is one term to describe it. Patriot Fuel+ is the one I just bought which does it.

KeymasterI have a Limefuel Rugged (Kickstarter backer, no other affiliation) that’s been very good to me, and it has passthrough charging.

KeymasterI don’t understand why any pack with more than one jack can not be used this way?
Have you actually tried any?
Are there some that need to be switched somehow from one mode to the other? The rate that they charge at vs output rate is another thing altogether it seems so I would try to find a pack with a bigger input supply I guess but I don’t have any packs that can not charge while they are discharged.

KeymasterMost USB battery packs do not have pass through capability; the circuitry must support charging the onboard battery in addition to whatever device is drawing power.

KeymasterI read somewheres that this is bad for the batteries so some manufactures put in a circuit to prevent this.
Any experts able to comment?September 30, 2025 at 7:07 am #28371admin
KeymasterIf the pack explicitly supports passthrough, it won’t be bad for the cells. If it doesn’t, you shouldn’t try it.

KeymasterI have 4 battery packs incoming that will support it I think, but I won’t know till they arrive. I hate the waiting.

KeymasterI thought all battery packs allowed pass through charging…
Often I am charging my vape and still vaping while it’s charging. It has a 2.1 and 2.4 output, so it’s not terribly slow.

KeymasterYour vape isn’t designed to charge other devices. It is not a “battery pack” in the same sense as what I’ve been talking about. As far as using it while it’s charging, again it depends on how the charging circuitry is designed. If it’s designed to be used while charging (which is similar to “passthrough” charging for a USB battery pack) then fine. What does its manual say?

KeymasterI never implied my vape was a battery.. . My battery is ravpower 16000 mah. I can use things while it’s charging.

KeymasterI just got 1 of the packs that will charge and can be used. 20,000 mah with 1A and 2A output.

KeymasterAlways wondered about the solar battery packs… i love solar, but many are china made and break within weeks.
I pair my battery with a 15 watt solar panel, works great while sitting on my dash while I’m working. I like free energy.

KeymasterFor the $13 it was mostly oops, it has a solar panel for what was claimed 20,000mah. I don’t know it has 20,000mah, but it is pretty large, so am sort of happy with it. I did find that if you plug it in to charge at the same time the output drops from 1A+ to 500ma. So I think it splits the input.
When we camp I use a 15W 5V panel and a 20W panel to help keep things running and a set of solar Christmas lights, white. I don’t really use the Christmas lights for the solar part. I upgraded the horrible battery inside and added some more so that the light lasts a full week on a charge, but it is nice because it comes on and goes off with the sunlight. So you can always see guyelines and see enough to get away from camp in the dark to go pee without a light. And it sucks coming back to a pitch black camp and can’t find a light because you can’t see the tent even.
