I was eager to review the Fellhoelter TiBolt for you guys, but it looks like someone beat me to it. I’ll start by saying that I agree with the positive things stated in that review, and add that the relatively short tip does not bother me, though it might look nicer at a shallow angle. It’s entirely dependent on your hand position while writing.

What I CAN bring to the table, however, is a comparison of the TiBolt with my previous edc pen, my sandblasted CountyComm Titanium Embassy Pen.

Despite being different, mechanically, these two pens are both solid and handsome with a sturdy feel. The mechanical differences may be obvious, but they are the primary differences. I purchased the TiBolt because, despite the sense of security holding on to the embassy pen’s cap brings me in the face of potential pen loss, I rarely lend my pen, and find unscrewing the cap slow and inconvenient. The TiBolt’s bolt action is quick and satisfying.

The TiBolt is slightly (5mm) longer than the closed embassy pen, at a total length of 13.9cm with the nib retracted, and most of that length extends upward from the clip when worn in a pocket, so it sticks out a bit higher than the embassy. With the embassy pen uncapped, it is quite a bit shorter than the TiBolt (an issue I’ve heard concerns writers with particularly large hands) at only 12cm.

The TiBolt is 11mm in diameter, and the embassy pen is 13mm. Roughly 2mm thinner, the TiBolt is also less “bulky” feeling than the embassy, and its lighter weight reinforces that feeling. It weighs only 1.4 oz (40g) compared to the embassy pen’s 2.2 oz(63g). It still has a nice heft to it, but does not have the weighty presence of the embassy pen. It makes it obvious to me (aside from the design) that the Tibolt was machined from Ti tubing while the embassy pen was machined from bar stock. It does not, however, detract from the sturdy feeling of the TiBolt.

Another area of difference is the clip. While both are very sturdy, the clip on the TiBolt is narrower (4mm across), but has the advantage of being titanium (all parts of the TiBolt are titanium except the spring and the refill). The Embassy pen’s clip (5mm across), and the screws which attach it, are stainless steel. They’d probably look nicer if I’d chosen to sandblast them when I blasted the pen, but it would still look different from the body of the pen. The TiBolt’s clip is also roughly 5mm longer than that of the Embassy pen, which is fitting to the proportions of the overall design.

Finally, I wanted to point out the quality of machining that went into this pen. It is, quite nearly, seamless.

I’m very happy with this pen and I’m so glad my wait is over. The only solace I can offer to those who are still waiting on theirs is that it will not disappoint.

If you guys can think of any aspects of this comparison I’ve left out or any specific questions you might have about either pen, please post.

Edit: AcerCulter has added a comparison to the MadMaxCo bolt action pen, scroll down to read it.
