I’ve had a (new style) Wave for about a year, with bit kit, but as it’s more bulk than I wanted to carry in pocket or on belt, I keep it in my EDC bag with me. I’ve had good use from it, but it seems *just* a bit smaller than I’d like, since I’ve been carrying the SwissTool X on my belt the last six months or so. I really dig that tool, but still drawn to the expanded functionality of the Wave. What to do?

So, with blinders on, I’d never noticed or paid any attention to the Surge. When I looked over the Leatherman picture thread, it caught my eye. I was immediately drawn to the outside large scissors (oooh), and the replaceable wire cutters (aaaah, but truth be told I’ve not cut wires with an MT in about 20 years). But as it dawned on me that it was similar in size to my beloved SwissTool, with even slightly better functionality than my beloved Wave, I was hooked.

So, a trip to the “local” (within 1 hr driving) REI last night, and a Surge (new model) is my newest MT. I really dig it. After the first bit of handling (OK, fondling), I pulled out the Wave to do a direct comparison. The moment I put the Wave in my hand, though, my first thought was…

    “Awww, isn’t it cute?”

Not to disparage the Wave, ’cause it’s a really good tool. But the Surge is just that much larger, I couldn’t help the thought.
