I don’t now why, but I’ve always loved old police revolvers. Old Smith and Wesson model 10’s, from the era of four screw side plates and pinned barrels. Of my small collection, the Hong Cong Royal constabulary, the N.Y.P.D. and the R.C.M.P. are some of my favorites. They all shoot the same with the heavier bullet weights, all have the silky smooth action, and like all revolvers eat anything that is shoved into them with no problems.
I guess I’m dating myself, but I remember when the >38 revolver was THE cops gun for over 80 years. Sort of a gold standard. Growing up and becoming a police officer myself, Bill Jordan was on the same level as God, and he thought auto’s were “slab sided varmints.” That was good enough for me. In my own time in blue uniform, a Smith and Wesson model 64 was my daily companion, and it was a great comfort on a few occasions. My little model 60 with the bobbed hammer rode along as back up, or incase of needing a New York reload. Thankfully, I never did.
Now my native Maryland is on the cusp of getting CCW, and I don’t have a problem picking what I’m going to carry. I guess there will be an old model 60 in my waistband. I’ve had this gun since 1972, put many many rtounds through it, and like my other revolvers, have never had a single malfunction. Even my old Colt Government model .45 would bobble once in a while. But my .38 revolvers never.
Any other old revolver fans out there?
