KeymasterI’m looking at getting a new (key-chain) EDC flashlight and while I’d love to spend cash on a zebralight or 4sevens, I kinda prefer to save money there to buy bigger and better lights down the road. The Fenix E01 looks cheap and effective, but what is the difference to the E05? What does the E05 offer over the E01? How do these two compare to the LD01 which is more than twice the price?
Also considering the NiteCore EZAA for key-chain carry because I heard it’s very small for a AA light but again $$. I’d appreciate if someone can give me more info on that light too.

KeymasterI love my E05’s. I have one in each color. You can’t expect a woman to carry the same color every day.

KeymasterThe main differences is the EO1 has a longer runtime but fewer lumens then the EO5, the EO5 is brighter but has a short runtime. I have one of each and the one I carry every day is the EO5 as a brighter light is what I need more. Both lights are a good choice, it just depends on the runtime and brightness you want.

KeymasterWhat is your budget? If you can afford a few more bucks I would go with: Olight I3, Olight I1, or Fenix E15. These lights would give you a small single cell light that have some light settings. It is nice having a low, medium, and high beam for a multipurpose light.

KeymasterBudget is about 30-35$ tops. I’ve considered the Olight I2 and I3 as a viable alternative.

KeymasterI’ve just got an E05 for ‘er indoors as a stocking filler. It is a definite improvement on the E01, although I wonder if the ‘hole’* in the lens will be an issue over time.
*I say hole, but I’m sure there is a more appropriate technical name for it. As long as nothing bad gets in and nothing important falls out I don’t mind.

KeymasterFenix E01 – 10 lumens for 21 hours (10 sun and 11 moon), Nicha GS 5MM
Pros: reliable, simple, long runtime, durable. Really a benchmark for battery vampires. Cons: Horrible blue tint (typical of 5mm LEDs), no lens to protect the led.
Fenix E05 – 27 lumens for 3 hours, CREE XP-E R2
Pros: reliable, simple, nice white tint, an optic that diffuses that light fairly evenly and protects the LED, small, higher output. Cons: sacrifice in runtime.
The LD01 is a multi mode light (26,3, and 72 lumens) from a CREE XP-G.I won’t comment on pros and cons as I do not own one.
I like the EZ lights but for me even the AA is to large for keychain carry. My favorite AAA light right now is the Thrunite Ti. Two mode twisty (.04 lumen and 60 lumen or 3 lumen and 60 lumen) with a centered lug for keychains, a nice finish, and great knurling. It is $16 at illumination supply:

KeymasterComparing these 2 is kind of apples and oranges. I have both and although the E05 has a brighter prettier beam, I use the E01 much more, it’s a proven light that’s tough and runs for a long, long time. It’s one light that I never have to worry about, it’ll light up every single time.

KeymasterI have both. EO1 on keys, EO5 clipped to pocket or EDC bag. If I could have only one it would be the EO1. you can improve the beam using fine steel wool on the nichia led to soften the beam and lessen the blue tint. It makes it a far more practical beam.

KeymasterForgive off-topic question: Smitty, do you know, will Ti handle lithium? Site specs NiMH and alkaline only.
Agree with other comments on E01 and E05. Have both, like them both, but as others have said, E01 hard to beat for reliability and run-time. Yes, tint could be better but that’s life with a 5mm. Its other attributes make up for it … for me anyway. Also agree with Smitty on AA keychain carry. If you’ve got much else on the keychain, the extra bulk/weight of AA does make a difference. And the point has been made many times on the forum, heavy keychain, if also used for car keys, can be bad for ignition switch.
My ultimate choice for keychain light: slim AAA with a 1/3 lighter lithium battery (or sometimes, the tiny Photon Freedom, which has served me well).

KeymasterE01 is a great choice, but for an only light I would go brighter at the expense of battery life. Now you’re talking about the LD01 or E05. I’m sure thrunite, maratac, and others make a good light, but I didn’t want a battery crusher when going through that decision process.
EDIT:
Holy necropost, batman! Whoops. Don’t search google and then post. 🙁September 24, 2025 at 8:11 am #22036admin
KeymasterThe keyring attachment on my E01 does not seem very strong, it’s bent and I’m sure it will break eventually like.my 4Sevens 123 keychain did

KeymasterI LOVE the LD01. I have a E01, E05, and LD01. The LD’s features are worth the cost. For keychain carry though, hard to beat the StreamLight Nano. And LR41s are cheap on amazon.
