KeymasterThis comparison is in response to a request by “jazzandmetal?”. This is the first time I’ve ever written one of these, so please feel free to comment/request further info below.
MODELS COMPARED
- Cogent Industries “The One” pen in semi polished finish ($139).
- Prometheus Writes “Alpha” pen in electroless nickel plated 6061T6 aluminium ($155)
APPEARANCE
Both pens are very attractive (if you’re looking for something that has obviously been milled out of a solid piece of metal). I personally prefer the appearance of the Cogent for three reasons:
- I like the semi polish finished, as it has feeling of understated elegance.
- He cleverly hides the opening seem for both the end cap and the main barrel. These seams are very noticeable on the Prometheus.
- There is no thread for the cap to post on the end of the pen. I personally would never use this feature and much prefer the simpler design of the Cogent.
DESIGN
This is where the Cogent really excels. The main advantages over the Prometheus are as follows:
- Three piece design. The Cogent only has three parts; the nib, main barrel and cap. This is achieved by the clip being integrated into the cap. I’m still trying to work out how this is done (it is very clever). The Prometheus just has a standard clip arrangement, so is just like any other pen and looks ugly next to the Cogent.
- The cap on the Cogent is retained by a “click” mechanism. I personally prefer this to a thread, as it’s technically harder to engineer (i.e. it has the geek appeal). One thing to note, the “click” was very stiff to begin with. However, after a few days use, it has broken-in and now operates very smoothly. I assume this is due to the material of construction being titanium.
BUILD QUALITY
Both are very high quality pens. However, I think I am slightly leaning towards the Prometheus, as the threads are much smoother. This could be down to the fact the Cogent is made from Titanium. I really need to use the titanium Prometheus to draw a firm conclusion.
USE
The Prometheus very slightly takes it on use, as I prefer the greater width and weight on the Alpha Pen.
PRICE
Both pens are very close in price and take the same types of refills. This isn’t an important factor for me.
CONCLUSION
Both pens are excellent. However, the Cogent wins it as the engineering and design is superior. My only complaint is that I would like the pen to weight a little more.
