Some of you may remember from my introduction that I am an aspiring beginner knife maker. Below is my journey with making my first knife from a lawnmower blade. Hope you enjoy, and if there are any other knife makers on the board, tips/pointers are welcome.
I am, by no means, an expert!!!
Started life as a riding mower blade. (I actually forgot to take a pic of the blade before I cut it…)
I used a cheap hand-held grinder with a cut-off wheel to cut the blade down, leaving just the flat piece in the middle.
Once it was cut to size and cleaned up a little, I could transfer my blade design to the steel. I used simple gridded graph paper to design the blade, then transferred that to poster board, cut out the shape from the poster board and used it as my template to transfer the outline to the steel.
I again used the grinder and cut off wheel to cut the rough shape out of the steel.
Then, using my 1″x30″ belt grinder, I refined the shape of the blade and began to profile the blade, tapering it from spine to cutting edge.
And to give you a little size perspective…
That is where I ended yesterday. Today, I finished profiling the blade…
Tomorrow, or one day this week, I will begin working to refine the shape of the finger guard. From there I will drill holes in the handle for attaching the grips at a later point.
Still lots more to do, including make the leather sheath for it! Stay tuned…
