Rule 16. Product Reviews by Members who maintain a product review site may not post external links to their reviews; however, we encourage and welcome direct posts of wholly independent, non-commercial reviews in their entirety. An independent review is one where the reviewer purchases the reviewed product, and has no connection with the product seller — in other words, an arms-length review.

Sponsored or compensated reviews are not permitted. Defined as a review where reviewer receives any form of compensation from the product supplier, seller or manufacturer. “Compensation” could be monetary payment, paid advertising agreement, affiliate-sales agreement, or the reviewed product was provided by product seller or manufacturer — whether temporarily or permanently — to facilitate the review.

If you’re unsure whether or not your review complies, or have questions, please message a staff member before posting.

Note to reviewers: We ask that members who post reviews include — prominently beneath the review — a simple statement that they personally purchased the reviewed product, and that they have no connection or arrangement with the seller or maker of the product (obviously, these declarations must be true). Might be over-disclosure for independent reviewers — depending on which attorney you believe — but this “best practice” should ensure full compliance with FTC regulations governing consumer endorsements (revised 2013).
