KeymasterBarring a waterproof iPhone 7 with a sapphire screen, I’m getting ready to leave the Apple ecosystem. I miss the all weather dependability of my old Casio G’Zone phones. An iPhone -even with a Belkin Survivor, a Lifeproof, or an Otterbox Defender case- just isn’t as tough. I’ve had the waterproof seals fail and I’ve cracked a screen through a rubberized case. I’m currently carrying an older, rugged, flip phone for making calls and texting and an iPod Touch (actually an iPhone that won’t read its SIM card) for mobile computing over wifi. They take up a lot of pocket space, so I really want to get back to using just one smartphone. Those of you with ruggedized smartphones, what’ve you got and why do you like it?

KeymasterI can’t be of much help, but if you’re looking for a cheap smart phone, and want to leave Apple, consider a Lumia 635 from Microsoft. Cheap, reliable. Perfect for the average guy, when it comes to smart phones. It is cheap, so even if you wreck the darn thing 5 times, it’s still cheaper. And you can hear the other person clearly, compared to other phones that you have to shove the darn thing into your head until you hear them.
I have never seen a rugged phone that was small, though. I had an iPhone 4 in an otterbox, and while it was protected, my pants weren’t from falling, and it took up more real estate than an opinel, lumia 635 and SAK combined.
(the reason I left the apple iphone was, even though the phone still worked fine, it was just so slow, and made it almost impossible to use. And, when I saw the Lumia 635 price, I ordered it.)

KeymasterI have an Otterbox defender on a Samsung S4. The phone is waterproof as is. I cut the soft plastic screen protector out and used a glass peel and stick protector. It has been through some tough stuff and is still perfect.
