This isn’t strictly a personal EDC item (like carrying something in a backpack) I asking about, but it is, in an automotive sense, an EDC issue.
I’m looking for some shopping advice.
I have some limited experience using handheld GPS receivers and using GoogleEarth as well.
Family members asked me about car-mounted (aka dashboard) GPS. They are interested in shopping for a device that offers the following basic requirements:
1: car-mountable (also removable)
2: turn-by-turn directions
3: true GPS; not faux GPS like in a smartphone (smartphones triangulate via cell towers; cell service around this region is spotty)
4: programmable using late-model MacOS X computers
5: ability to record routes and waypoints
6: weather resistant, in case they want to mount it on a motorcycle
7: can be charged/powered by a car’s ciggie lighter port
Where are some good places to shop for car-mounted GPS receivers? Where are some of the features and issues to look for? Are factory-refurbished GPS devices for sale anywhere?
Thanks for your advice.
