I just won an auction for a Smith and Wesson K-Frame Model 64, an old police trade-in with a bobbed hammer. I bought it purely as a sporting toy to try revolver tournaments when I’m getting bored with the Glock I carry and compete with. It’ll be kept around to spice up dry fire practices around my bedroom, to drill live fire occasionally on a whim, and may get outfitted with a competition holster and a set of speed loaders someday. For now, I’ll have an old six-gun without a holster lying around which serves no exact purpose in my weapons system. I carry and sleep with a Glock, train with a carbine because I was never hugged as a child and it made sense to simply own a rifle, and have a .22 for Appleseed volunteering and teaching. What purpose could this very functional antique serve?
For example, does anyone have a spare pistol in their home in a particular location in case they’re away from their carry gun? What about keeping a kit for arming a second person if a reliable friend ends up with you during a tense disaster? Are revolver bullets containing precious metals easier to find in case mythical creatures become a problem?
Sounds like you bought it for range use and have no desire or intention of using it for self defense. I’d store it unloaded wherever you store your other range guns. My antique Model 64 is one of my carry guns, so it’s not a spare.

SamMythical creatures only pose mythical problems. The S&W Model 64 is quite competent to solve real problems created by very real miscreants that freely roam every community. Load it with .38 +P and practice with your support hand in the event that your nocturnal polymer companion and your primary shooting appendage are simultaneously rendered incapacitated by evil fairy dust.
While my Glock 19 and Shield fill 85% of my defensive and carry needs, I have 3 revolvers in my life right now….
– 637 J-Frame. Slips into my pocket and conceals like crazy. Perfect when I need the most discrete level of concealment. Not a range toy by any stretch and not easy to shoot, but can certainly come in handy for bad-breath distances.
– 4″ Ruger GP100. One of the most reliable, easy to shoot pieces of machinery I own. Excellent for teaching new shooters with cream-puff 38spl loads and tons of fun with big, nasty, snarling, drooling 357 loads. It’s something I could easily hand to my wife or kids to use in a defensive situation. They can all shoot this revolver very well with 38 +p ammo. And 38 +p is nothing to sneeze at either.
– 2 3/4″ blued Security Six. Handles even the stoutest loads like they were candy. Easy to carry OWB and exceptionally well built. Again, my family would have no problem shooting +p ammo out of it.5-6 shots of well placed 38 or 357 should quickly end whatever nasty situation you find yourself in. So yea. I believe there’s always a place in one’s life for a good revolver.
Now that I’m starting to reload, I see all of these revolvers getting much more range time.
a person might drill an angled hole in the casing next to the front door…. might remove the nail head, and tap in a 16d nail…might wrap the nail with tape…might slip the barrel of an unused wheel gun over the nail… really don’t know who would so such a thing 😉
A secondary location is an interesting question but is probably function of how you carry around the house. If you take off your pistol when you get home and leave it at the other end of the house, then having a second firearm somewhere might make some sense. Of course, if you’re truly that concerned why not make the second pistol a duplicate of your carry weapon, one you’re intimately familiar with and can shoot well?
The odds of a potentially deadly encounter happening when you have someone else around that you would trust sufficiently to hand them a firearm seems pretty remote. But then, you might live in a different kind of neighborhood than I do. 😉
I usually carry my J-Frame in addition to my primary weapon in the winter when large coats and sweaters are in play. Primary weapon on my strong side hip and the J-frame in weak side coat pocket. in lite clothes are running out the house quickly I will stick the j-frame in my pocket as a my primary…
I inherited a colt cobra that’s older than I am. I’ve shot it a bit and don’t really like it, but it works. It was my grandfather’s car gun for my whole life until he died.
I have it in a sticky holster that I use for pajama pants pocket carry when I’m not wearing pants.
I’ve thought about putting it in my weak side jacket pocket for winter, but I tend to take my jacket off too much to feel safe with that.
Also, as for competition…look into moon clips as opposed to speed loaders. They’re like 8 times faster.
