Looking for recommendations for a ccw for the wife. She recently decided she would like to start carrying. She is very much a gun newbie. She has been shooting with me a few times for fun but has never done any real training. I will for sure going to get her signed up for a class. Any suggestions for a good pistol would be greatly appreciated.

    Looking for:
    -Something of the subcompact variety
-Something in 9mm or .380. She has pretty small hands so a single stack mag would be best
-Something with an external safety, so no Glocks please

The pistol that feels best to her. If she doesnt like it she will not shoot it or carry it. Everyone here can suggest something but unless she gets her hands on it it is all moot. I thought the same thing you did with my fiance and her carrying a small gun in 9mm or .380. She is 5’0″ and has small hands as well and do you know what she carries? A 4″ 1911 in .45 because thats what feels best to her and what she shoots best. Let your wife do the shopping and do not give her any input just let her look at EVERYTHING and you may leave surprised.

I say all of this because I work at a gun shop and I see this every single day and deal with husbands who think think they know what is best.

BTW a Glock does have an external safety.

For sure I will have her try out different options and pick one that feels the best. I am just looking for suggestions.

second the motion to let her decide… I’ve worked with some very frail, older ladies, and many have a hard time of removing a chambered round in an autoloader… the Beretta 86 with tip up barrel was a solution for many of them

Pretty much everything Il Duce said including the comment about the safety. Safety on a CCW is a pretty controversial topic and I won’t go into all of the arguments for or against. Let’s just say that I want every 10th of a second advantage I can gain.

    I’m not a fan of 380 at all, so I won’t comment.

For a 9mm, I’d take a close look at the Shield or LC9S.

why an auto? 442 with some CT’s on it is hard to beat……………

My wife (5′ 2″) prefers a revolver to autos, simpler to verify loaded/unloaded and not buttons to push or levers to move.

    She carries this one:

    Ruger LCR

If she likes what you carry, it is nice to have interchangeable mags etc. with your partner. Wife and I carry M&P Shield .40’s.

Well, I like the Kel Tec P3AT, its a good reliable, light CCW. However, most of these wont have a safety because the trigger pull is heavy. You have to pull the trigger like you mean it, for it to discharge.

Ruger LCP is good, as well as Ruger LC9.
Taurus TCP is a good budget shooter.

I think revolvers are a good option too…

    Any S&W J-Frame is great.
Ruger LCR is good, .22 mag is no joke. Also comes in .38 and I even seen a 9mm version.

Revolvers are great but I always like to have an extra mag on me. Just a rule I have for myself.

Check out the Walther PK380 if you can find one. Great ergonomics, an extremely light slide spring, and the felt recoil is very mild.
Although the .380 is a bare minimum for self defense I’m getting one for a female friend of mine for her birthday cause everything else about the gun, to her, is great.

Take her to a gun store and let her look at and handle a number of different guns. Go to a range that rents guns if you have one near you so she can try them out herself. Also, have her look at TheCorneredCat web site. Written by a woman firearms instructor.
