So I would like to get into the world of amateur radio. For an emergency if need be and just for fun of course.
I’ve been reading a little bit online and just feel lost. I am sure there are some people here that can help me out.
I guess my first request would be for some good sources to learn some basics. Any link or book would be appreciated.
I also just want some basic advice on what to buy. I’m certain I want a held-held radio. I’ve read I’m probably going to want to upgrade to an aftermarket antenna. I’d just like some recommendations along with information about what I can do with it.
I really only want to spend less than 100$, closer to 50$ preferably, on the radio itself to get into all of this. And I’ll worry about the antenna later.
Also I’m curious about the different license levels. I’m going to need to learn much more obviously. But how limited is the technician vs the general license? I really have no interest in long range communications at this time. But I’d like to be able to sit at home and listen in/ communicate locally.
I’m not sure what I’m asking really. Just for a radio recommendation to get me started, and a good source of information to browse through. But please include any information you think will help me in my newest obsession.
Thanks in advance for your input.
