KeymasterHi all
My first review so all feedback on do’s and don’ts for next time welcome!
As the title suggests I’ve just received the Cogent Industries Mini-TiTweezers in the post so thought I would do a quick review on them.
They cost $39 dollars, are made from grade 5 tianium, and approximate dimensions are 45mm in length (x), around 8.5mm wide at the widest point (y) and about 2mm in height (z).
And unfortunately it’s the latter where the main issue I have with them arises.
I’ve taken a photo of them alongside some SAK tweezers for scale, they’re rougly the same size (I’m worried this won’t work, I uploaded it to Imgur):
Because they’re only about 2mm in height, this makes them difficult to hold between between your thumb and index finger without them shifting in your grip (I have fairly average sized hands). You basically need additional stabilisation from your middle finger.
SAK tweezers are around 3mm in height, and as a result I find them a bit more useable in comparison.
The Mini-TiTweezers I think needed to be at least the same, ideally 4 – 5mm in height / the z axis in my opinion, and you wouldn’t have lost any of the portability.
Machining is reasonably decent, but on the pair I had one side is noticeably wider above the gimping which results in two slightly different sized pincers, though admittedly this does not affect how they come together when squeezed.
Summary: If these were at least 3mm, and as suggested above desirably 4 – 5mm in height, to help them from shifting and rolling in your grip, combined with the hypoallergenic (grade 5) titanium then they would be great. I watched a video of the larger version on YouTube, and I had (wrongly) assumed they would be similar dimensions except for a reduction in the length.
I should have asked, but equally I think the manufacturer should list all three dimensions, not just the length, on the website page.
And when you factor in the $39 cost, I’m left with that slight feeling I haven’t quite received enough titanium for my money. After consideration I think I’ll hang onto them, but this is partly due to what I think is a bit of a lack of alternative ones (I appreciate everyone is going to say Uncle Bill’s, I’ve got the SS ones, but I’ve read a lot of comments that they were manufactured to a higher standard previously) on the market presently.
I’ll stop typing now! More than happy to respond to any questions or clarify any comments which (unfortunately) weren’t clear
