Now that the camping season is done for me and the family, I’m getting a chance to sit down and reload/remake/revise gear kits.
One of the popular (and for good reasons) ways to kit gear is in altoid tins. These small, light, and inexpensive containers are great for organizing or compartmentalizing specific types of gear. I personally prefer the tins over plastic. Waterproof, no. But they make good windscreens and char cloth. Very light, durable, and weather resistant. Some people even cook and boil water in them.
The only issue with the altoids in IMHO is the size and hinged lid. I like to refinish my tins and the hinge area creates issues with paint and rust. Plus, always finding a good pouch for a fair price can be difficult unless you make your own.
Here’s a start photo.

The Maxpedition Volta battery pouch is great for tins. Comes in all the cool colors, durable, PALS friendly, and $15 shipped most places. It’s big for an altoids tin, but that’s OK.
