In Norway (and in Germany, I guess), new cars are sold with a rather large first aid kit, normally placed with the spare tire and warning triangle in the boot. I do not know whether this is required by law, but I’ve always been glad to have one in my car. However, until now, it’s been one of these things I’ve almost forgotten about, because I’ve been lucky enough never to need it.

This thread changed that. It reminded me that I actually didn’t have a clue what was in my car FAK. Therefore, I didn’t know whether my kit would be any good in a real emergency, or whether I would even know how to use what was there.

Today, I took a thorough look, and what I found was what a non-professional like myself would call a “trauma-kit”. Nothing complicated, but lots of bandaging materials for serious injuries. Exactly what you would need after a car accident. So far, I have only added a small “comfort kit” in a zip lock bag and swapped the small medical shears for a slightly bigger pair.

    Here is the entire kit:

The car kit is made for Volvo by Hans Hepp, Germany, and contains:

    • 1 roll of adhesive tape (5m x 2,5 cm)
    • 8 adhesive bandages (10cm x 6 cm)
    • 3 medium field dressings
    • 1 large field dressing
    • 2 bandaging cloths (gauze like, 40×60 cm)
    • 1 bandaging cloth (60×80 cm)
    • 6 wound dressings/compresses (10×10 cm)
    • 2 elastic gauze bandages (6 cm x 4 m)
    • 3 elastic gauze bandages (8 cm x 4 m)
    • 1 rescue sheet/space blanket
    • 2 triangular bandages
    • 1 pair of medical shears
    • 2 pairs of gloves
    • 1 first aid booklet

The little comfort kit contains two small and two large bandaids, 4 x 400 mg ibuprofen and 2 x 400 mg paracetamol.

The Buck 110 is in the photo just to give an idea of the size of the kit.

What do you think of this kit? The bag has room for a few more items. What, if anything, should I add?
