For my birthday/father’s day, I bought myself a Maxpedition FR-1 pouch to use as a FAK. I stocked it up with the usual contents and stuck it with my BOB/72 hour kit bag.

Today I was at a clients and managed to give myself a nice deep cut on my ring finger with my SOG Trident while clumsily trying to open a plastic package. After almost passing out (I don’t do well initially with blood) I started to worry about how I was going to tend to myself, then I remembered the new FAK, retrieved it from the car and went to the restroom.

When I stocked it, I put some butterfly closures in it. I don’t think I’ve ever used a butterfly closure before, but this incident sure called for one. Those are going to be a permanent staple from now on!

While the FR-1 is definitely overkill for the size FAK I need in my EDC, and its contents are ever evolving, I’m sure glad I had it today!
