One item that I’m obsessed with is a scalpel. I know all of the drawbacks to the scalpel (it dulls easy, isn’t rugged) But on that occasion when you need a good clean sharp blade for that one cut it’s crazy useful.
I modified my Leatherman to add a Scalpel “Handle” but for my other times when all I have is a micro I wanted the option to have a scalpel (with handle.) My solution was to take a $3 scalpel handle from Amazon and mod it a bit.
I made four tweaks: First I cut it to a 3” length.
Second, I milled out a bit (to accept a safety pin – still my favorite EDC), Third a machined a small grove into the side to accept a needle (for a sewing kit) and last a small hole for a key ring.
I know that the needle grove is hard to see (silver on silver and all), but trust me it’s there.
The size also means that I can fold the wrapping for the blade a little bit and just tape it to the handle.
Then just a bit of duct tape to secure it, and all done!
