KeymasterFwiw, I spent several years running AV cabling and installing AV systems. We always used white, rather than the standard black, electrical tape. Most of the cables were black, blue or some other dark color and we’d wrap the ends with white tape to label the source/destination. White tape is easily written on with a Sharpie, Fisher Space Pen, or even regular ball point ink. White tape does everything black tape does (but can be written on), and should be available at the same price. Electrical tape in various colors is available at Home Depot, Lowe’s, etc. or can be found much less expensively online.
If you EDC a foot or two of electrical tape (a very handy thing to have on hand), you might want to consider carrying white or yellow tape instead of black. This allows you to label things or even make small signs that can stick to many surfaces. Yellow might be good for more noticeable signs in an emergency situation. I usually wrap narrow (1″) Gorilla duct tape and white electrical tape around a useless credit card or wax paper and keep it in my wallet. Both tapes fit, in parallel, lengthwise (long dimension) on a standard credit card.
As has been noted elsewhere, cable ties in different sizes have a million-and-one uses. It’s also amazing what you can do with a 1″ or 1.5″ square of velcro. They stick to almost anything and can hold a surprising amount of weight. I usually keep at least two or three of these handy.
Not an earth-shattering EDC revelation, but it may prove useful to someone under certain circumstances!
