I recently walked into a room full of shooters in the midst of debating this old, tiresome subject. All of these individuals (all family members) know that I prefer .45. All of them know that I also carry 9mm when appropriate. I didn’t allow myself to get “roped” into the discussion. I didn’t say one word. It was more fun to just watch and listen. Some quoted kinetic energy numbers. Others gravitated to “one-shot stop” stats.
Then, everyone in the room looked at me and paused to hear anything I had to say.
I quoted standup comic Steven Wright and said, “Some people are afraid of heights, I’m afraid of widths.” I blurted five inches or go home as I smirked and said no more.
Then the group went into that long-honored tradition of show and tell and placed their carry piece on the large table. Never seen so many small, short-barreled semi-autos and revolvers. I didn’t immediately participate. I was finally asked to show mine. I quoted the late, great comic Robin Williams and said, “You’ll need to stand back a few more feet.”
I placed my highly-customized Browning Hi-Power with the extended barrel (5.25 inches) on the table.
We laughed for several hours!
