For a long period of time the best riflemen in the US Army was a non-combatant.
My father had a very unusual and varied career in the military. At one point he was in MTU, one of his friends there was an odd duck.
His friend was the best shot in all the services. Not only the best shot in all the services he was the only 2 time American Olympic Gold medalist in rifle shooting. He also was a world champion 7 times. He was not a single discipline precision shooter. He competed at 50 yards on out to 1000 yards and set many world records.
Of course there are super competitors and someone has to be the best of an era, that is not the unusual part.
Here is the part that is a bit different. The best precision shooter in all branches of the military at one time was an Army Chaplin.
He was Gary Anderson.
