Advice for entering the gun world?

I did not grow up in a family/environment that used guns, so at 31 I’m still a newb.

Been wanting to get a handgun for personal protection/responsibility reasons, and I’m looking for advice from you guys with experience.

To give some background I’m in Texas and will be getting concealed carry license ASAP.

Actually going to the range tomorrow with a friend who has his license, just not sure what to look for/ask/do.

I’ve shot 3 different guns in my life (once each)–BB, .40, 12 gauge.
