I see a lot of people carrying alcohol wipes/prep pads in their boo boo and FAK.

I’m curious about options to replace these with Zeiss Lens Cleaning wipes to offer far more utility especially when it comes to on person carry.

    Here is my personal assessment:

    Cost: Tie

-Zeiss $2.88 at my local Walmart for 50
-Prep pad $3.00 allover for 200

For something like this where I am not using thousands a year the difference between 6 cents a unit and 2 cents a unit are irrelevant to me.

Active Ingredient: Tie but maybe prep pads

The MSDS for the Zeiss wipes list 70% isopropyl alcohol as the only ingredient so it is the same as the alcohol prep pads I have seen. (edit: I can no longer find solid support that the Zeiss wipes are at 70% w/w isopropyl. See a couple of post below for MSDS info)

    Packed Size: Prep pad

The basic width and height is more or less the same but the prep pads are very thin. I would say it takes 4 prep pads to equal the thickness of a Zeiss wipe. However, the prep pad packages is VERY thin so 4x VERY thin still makes the Zeiss Wipe package thin.
As you can see in my hygiene kit with gum, Zeiss wipe, and floss stick it is still a nice thin kit and easily fits into a credit card slot in my BigSkinny.

    Application: Zeiss wipe +++

I’m not concerned about the survivalist aspects of the alcohol wipes but I feel the Zeiss wipe share many of the same properties in this regard. From my COMPLETELY UNEDUCATED and UNINFORMED (that is where you guys/gals come in) the only real good use for the pre pads are to…well pre an area for an injection or blood draw. They are tiny and mildly abrasive strips of cotton.

The Zeiss has substantially more surface area (about the size of my hand) and this leads too many more FAK/hygiene applications than the prep pads are suited for.

    ·Cleaning camera lens

oMy kid always finds a way to get his fingers on my point and shoot lenses and when out on the town this can mean the difference between a good picture and poo. This is what the product is designed to do and does a very good job. A prep pad would not get anywhere near my lenses.

    ·Great general lens/glass clearer

oGlasses, phones, monitors, laptops, mirrors… Where are surrounded by transparent material and having these clean just makes the day go by a little better.

    ·Disinfectant wipes

oGiven their large size these work really well for cleaning all sorts of items that you would like to clean off and disinfect (hands, phone receiver, door knobs…) While I will be switching over to BZK wipes for my wallet FAK kit I don’t see why these could not be used as a reasonable (if not a little painful) replacement, and given their size, easier to perform the task than the prep pad.

    ·Napkin

oThese work rather well as a towelet and have the added benefit of being antimicrobial.

Ok so that is the village idiots take on the subject…your thoughts?
