KeymasterHey guys,
I’m almost finished assembling my FAK and would like some input on how I’m doing so far. This is my first, “real” first aid kit. I don’t intend on EDC’ing it; it will mostly sit in my car unless I’m out on outdoor adventures / vacations where medical aid is not readily available. I am EMT certified, therefore I am trained to administer most of what I have in my kit (other than the Israeli Battle Dressing – but it looks simple enough after watching a few youtube videos). While it might seem a bit overkill, I envisioned this kit to help me be prepared in the worst scenarios; say I’m hiking in a remote area with no cell service and the nearest aid is at least 45min – 1 hour out.
Here’s the contents:
-4x pairs (that’s 8 total) Vinyl gloves
-1x pair of latex gloves
-6x Sterile 2×2″ Gauze pads
-5x Sterile 4×4″ Gauze pads
-1x 50g 5×5″ QuickClot sponge
-20+ Sterile Alcohol wipes (all 70% isopropyl alcohol)
-2x rolls of 3M micropore tape
-1x Generic ACE bandage w/ clips
-2x Sterile Rolled Gauze
-2x Wet Ones packets
-2x AfterBite cream packets
-2x Generic Benzalkonium Chloride Towelettes (small – same size as alcohol wipes, but smaller than Wet ones)
-8x Finger Band-aids (Latex free, and latex)
-1x Sterile 4″ Israeli Battle Dressing
-1x Generic SAM splintAs for equipment, I also carry a pair of trauma shears, penlight, and a regular BIC pen with a few blank flash cards (for jotting down vitals, information, etc.). Everything is housed inside a Condor Rip-away EMT pouch with the equipment on the outside MOLLE straps.
For meds:
-12x Bismuth Subsalicylate tablets
-12x Chewable Ibuprofen (100mg ea – I chose chewables because some not everyone can take pills and studies have shown chewables dissolves in the mouth quicker than tablet forms.)Need to stock up on:
-12x Chewable Aspirin
-12x Chewable Acetaminophen (for those rare individuals who are allergic to Ibuprofen)
-Packets of pure sugar (for diabetics; like my grandma)When I was building this kit, I tried to limit everything down to addressing the essentials. I tried to keep the ABCs (Airway, Bleeding, Circulation), especially hemorrhages, tension pneumothorax, and airway obstruction in mind when building this kit. I think I have bleeding and circulation down, but I’m not sure if I would actually carry an NPA / OPA kit (even though I’m trained in simple airway adjuncts such as NPA / OPAs) to address airway issues. I thought about adding a CPR mask, but it’s too bulky and I am able to render mouth-to-mouth in a pinch.
Am I missing anything else? The only thing I think I’m missing is perhaps a CAT tourniquet. I will post some pics of the complete kit when I get the rest of my meds / IBD + generic SAM splint in the mail. I’m open to all suggestions / criticisms! Thanks in advance!
EDIT (8/1/13): Pics are now included in post #7. Just scroll down!
