KeymasterHey guys,
I was looking for some opinions on the subject of ‘downgrading’ from dSLR to mirrorless. Lately I’ve been really struggling with my Nikon behemoth setup. Not only is it heavy on the neck but I’ve started to feel self conscious when out and about. Pointing it at people with big lenses especially! The 77mm filter and huge lens hood sure do make an intimidating front end. On my last trip, to Kathmandu, the 35mm lens lived on the camera almost the entire trip. The unfortunate truth is that I think I get better candid shots and feel less of a target for crime (or perception as a tourist) with a smaller setup
So I got to thinking (uh ho), now that I’m not doing as much paid photography work, and that I’m finding it would be easier to EDC a brick than my camera, why not get a mirrorless.. Enter fuji stage right. Awesome cameras, even more awesome lenses.
I’m thinking,, Fuji X-E2 and XF56mm f/1.2 to start with. Followed by the XF18mm (or XF27mm) The as a good daily carry lens. The 56mm will make a good photo day focused lens, love that focal length on crop sensor, and love the allure of f/1.2
even if its’ just for bragging rights
What problems will I encounter coming from a dSLR?
Lack of OVF?
Camera response times?
Lack of tethered shooting?
Lack of IR shutter release?
Lack of interval timer shooting?
Difference in form factor? (is a thumb support really the essential people claim it to be with the rangefinder styled bodies?)
Having a base ISO of 200 and max shutter speed of only 1/4000 paired with fast lenses? Will I have to budget for an ND filter?
How good are the Nikkor to Fuji adaptors? My dad has a whole load of glass I’ll miss being able to use, namely that 10-24mm SWA…
And perhaps more importantly, what do you think the advantages are going to be?
Form factor for sure!
Looking forward to the digital view finder in terms of real-time changes as you alter settings (for example the visible changes on altering exposure adjustment)
Light lenses that are crop sensor specific (hello Nikon where are your DX SWA prime lenses?)
Wifi! Not so much for me to upload stuff but to share photos on the go with others it seems like a great advantage
A lighter tripod or even a gorilla pod. Goodbye bloated tripod! As a UL camper I always winced when I added my camera gear to my rucksack.
Hope some of you guys can chime in, theres a cracking deal on the 56mm just now in the UK (new for 660£) so I’m ITCHING to click ‘buy’!
