KeymasterGosh, had a big disappointment in the watch department recently.
Have a really nice Seiko (two tone quartz movement chronometer) and another nice Citizen Skyhawk (nighthawk version) which had both stopped. The Citizen was an eco-drive and was only about 4 years old with no damage, so having it stop was a bit weird. The Seiko was much older, probably 10+ years, so I just figured the battery gave up the ghost.
I took both watches to my jeweler who is also a Citizen dealer (among others) figuring they just needed batteries (I’d read that the eco-drives can in fact have their power cells go dead over time). Both watches were 200m watches, so I also wanted them re-pressure tested as part of the repair. They told me they’d need to send them off which I figured they’d need to do. Said it would take 8-12 weeks and there would be a $75 inspection fee. Wow…but okay.
So yesterday I get a call from the jeweler. The Seiko is hosed; it’s not a battery and parts are no longer available. DOA. The Citizen is not a battery either, but a bad capacitor and some other mechanical issues with the movement (???). $346 to fix. Well, the watch only had very light wear and no damage, but it only cost about $350 when I bought it new initially. Now, 4 years later, it was going to cost almost as much to make it work (again)? Bummed! If the watch would have had some sentimental value that might have been different, and it wasn’t even my favorite watch anyway. Sorry, but no!
So, 2 watches in for repair and 0 watches fixed. Two watches now removed from my collection, and very disappointed! My jeweler was cool about it and waived all fees (gawd, knows I buy enough stuff from them), but I’m still bummed.
I guess I’ll go dig a shallow grave out in the back forty and have a small ceremony with me and the dogs.
