Hi Everyone,
Just picked up a new iPad Air 2, along with a Targus stand/case. I’d like to use a portable BT keyboard with it. Does anyone have any recommendations/thoughts? I’d like a good unit (buy once) and good portability.

If buy once is a priority, any of the case style ones are only useful until the iPad slightly changes shape. I use the old apple Bluetooth keyboard that takes AA batteries tucked into an origami workstation case. The case protects the keyboard inside a bag making it portable and it folds into a little stand you can put your iPad on to turn it into a mini workstation like setup.

I’ve got a Bluetooth one from Logitech. It comes with a case for the keyboard that you can fold out into a tablet stand. I bought mine several years ago and have used it with several different tablets. As I recall they had an Apple one and an Android one, both of which I passed on to get just the normal “windows” style one, but the only difference are a couple of button markings as I recall. Takes AA batteries and I’ve had zero issues.
If you want something nice and compact i can highly recommend the microsoft ‘wedge’ keyboard. It is on the heavy side as its made from a very sturdy plate of aluminium and for some reason the top cover weighs a ton as well but its very very nice! The cover can be removed and used as a tablet stand and when you place it back on the keyboard it turns the board off automagically (well not magic, it used magnets)! It runs off 2AAA batteries and works for ages on 2 eneloops. The keys on it have some travel and are decent sized very much so like a laptop.

Thanks for your replies. One the holidays are over, I’ll look for an after-Christmas sale, or perhaps a President’s Day special.
I don’t want to get into a situation where a keyboard “fits” a specific iPad model, only to have it (inevitably) change. That wedge KB looks interesting and its only about $40. I had presumed that it would be a lot more, considering that it’s a MS product. I’ll keep looking…

The wedge is very decent value for the money imho, $40 bucks isnt expensive at all and if i had to purchase a new one right now i would pay that in a heartbeat. I bought mine 2nd hand tho for abouts 15 euros XD And like you said, its not specifically tied to any one kind of device… so it will work on PC, android or any device really that has any form of bluetooth support for peripherals. I am not actually one to recommend microsoft products in general, but their hardware can be pretty darn decent at times and this is a great example of that!
If you have any questions let me know and ill answer them the best i can (i can not test anything with an ipad im afraid as apple devices that are not dedicated mp3 players are not allowed in this household)

funny you should say that…. I just saw it on Amazon… bought it. With tax and free Prime shipping, I got it for $42.79. So, no huge investment.
Because I hadn’t looked at them at all prior to this, I thought any decent one would be at or around Apple’s price point. Happily, that isn’t so. I also like the MS/Android/Apple slide switch on the KB.

Logitech has a couple. K480 and K380. Reviews are decent, better for the k480. Key stroke feel and noise are the weaker points. But the noise comments seem overblown to me. Of course, I’m a fan of mechanical keyboards that aren’t particularly quiet anyway.
I’ve been using a cheap Jelly Comb keyboard with Android tablets and also my Surface 3. Apparently it also works with Apple products although I haven’t tried that. Best $20 I’ve ever spent. Just search Jelly Comb Keyboard at Amazon and it will turn up.

I rec’d the MS Universal KB today. I’ve used it for just a short while but I’m very impressed with it. It looks to be well-made, closes up nicely, and is very compact. Just showed my daughter and she is very excited.

+1 Bought one to go accompany my wife’s iPad Air (at the time of purchase). She’s really pleased with the combo.
