Some time ago, I posted asking about 9mm guns, and got some great advice. But I’ve since realized that I would be more comfortable starting with a revolver than a semi-automatic.

I have been practicing at a range, off an on over the last year, and trying out a few different things from the armory. The Smith & Wesson 686 with a 4″ barrel has been my favorite so far. I think it would be a good gun to learn on. It would be kept at home or taken to the range rather than carried on my body. Unlike the little J frames I’ve tried, the recoil is more manageable for me. It’s also an advantage that it can be used with both 357 and 38 ammunition. And finally, it was the first enjoyable shooting experience I’ve had so far.

So I’ve decided to get a 686 and am wrestling with whether or not it is better to buy it new (this model is quite expensive) or used. Someone local to me is offering to sell a 20 year old gun, and I’m trying to decide if there is any disadvantage to going that route. I’m also wondering if there is any guideline for determining a fair price.

    Thanks for any advice!

    Beth
