Hey all, just wanted to see how you approach this. Would love to know more about everyone’s situation as it pertains to walking your dog and keeping it safe if a threat were to present itself to you or your friend.

    • What kind of dog do you have? How well trained are they?
    • Are they more likely a deterrent or a liability?
    • Always on a leash?
    • Leash in gun hand (drop the leash if you had to draw) or off hand (hold onto the dog while dealing with the threat)?
    • Any different at night if you’d need a flashlight?
    • Do you also carry a less lethal option?
    • Have you ever been confronted with a situation while walking your dog?

I’ve got a 5 year old male Hound/Pitbull mix, about 75-80 lbs. He’s quite intimidating looking, but I carry almost every time I walk him. Especially at night. I’m in a safe, gated community, but I won’t not carry at night with him. I always have pepper spray with me when I walk him. I try to vary my route too, but it’s a small neighborhood; not many places to go. I hold his leash in my left hand when I’m walking in the day time with him walking on my right. At night, I have a flashlight in my left hand and I carry his leash in my right hand. If anything happened, I’d drop the leash and draw with my right hand. This is all of course, last resort, after SA and all attempts to avoid a situation or confrontation fail.

    Thoughts? Experiences?
