Casio pathfinder band replacement (help)

My awesome wife got me a Casio PAW-2000 (3172) for Christmas and a Zulu watch band. I’m having some trouble getting the factory band off. Are the (what looks like) screws that holds the band to the watch functional? I mean, do I have to unscrew them or are they just for looks and a tension spring like most watches? I’ve tried to put a screw driver on each side of the band and unscrew the screws but I can’t get them to turn. So what am I doing wrong?
