Take her to a gun store and let her look at and handle a number of different guns. Go to a range that rents guns if you have one near you so she can try them out herself. Also, have her look at TheCorneredCat web site. Written by a woman firearms instructor.
+1 … also, show her how to strip and clean whatever she’s considering. That should be part of the decision. IMHO, she needs to understand the gun and be able to take care of it herself. If that makes her choice a small revolver, so be it.December 27, 2025 at 1:04 pm #143112admin

KeymasterFor what you are looking for I would suggest a sig p238. It has the external safety you want. It’s great for small hands (my wife has very small hands and she likes it a lot). Also if your wife has small hands she might have trouble racking the slide on some guns. The p238 is very easy to rack. It’s also a very soft shooter being a 380 and a little heavier than some of the competition. Lastly it has good sights. That may not be the biggest concern for some but I personally always like to have good sights on my carry guns. You could also look at the p938 which is the 9mm version but I don’t have any experience with those.

KeymasterMy wife likes to “see the thingy go around”, so she likes revolvers. But on the other hand, she likes the LCP also. She needs to try some out.

KeymasterLet her shoot compacts, subcompacts, etc. The best choice is to have her shoot any gun that she might buy, but at least see how she handles guns of different sizes.
Subcompact+small hands+new shooter is not always a good thing. Small grips and short barrel can make the gun harder to control. I would hate for her to get turned off from guns and carrying because of getting a gun that’s too small to control.December 27, 2025 at 1:06 pm #143117admin

KeymasterMy wife got the P238 sports 12, hogue grips, night sights its a nice gun. I actually carry it a lot. She doesnt feel very confident with carrying it so she doesnt, which is something we are working on.
She has taken a few lessons from this woman, she has a lot of good videos a lot geared towards women and carrying/shooting.
https://www.youtube.com/user/KeepingPiece2010/videosI’d def get her to not only shoot the gun but take some shooting/carrying/drawing lessons too. Shooting is one thing, being comfortable carrying the gun is a whole other.

KeymasterI carry a Springfield XDS 9mm amazing gun, very accurate, it’s also fairly slim, I have bigger hands so it almost feels to small in mine but as far as concealing goes there’s nothing better in my opinion…. Maintenance is very simple which is always a plus, and most importantly it is the safest handgun I have ever owned due to the lever that has to be pressed by the lower part of the thumb before the trigger can be engaged. It also has a small slide on the top where if a round is in the chamber it pokes up a little bit to warn you (given you should always clear a weapon when you don’t know what state it is in)… I digress, it’s a great weapon and I’d recommend it to anyone

Best to be represented/advised proactively by ONE so that you DON’T need to be judged by 12 six. -
