vB4 has been a disaster to Internet Brands. It does not take a lot of googling to see what I am talking about.
They are working at fixing things but we do not have a stable platform and I don’t think we can put into place the modifications needed at this point. We can make the modifications but they will likely need to be changed at each upgrade.
Internet Brands is going to refactor the software and they estimate it will take them a year to do that.
Here are my options they way I see it.
We can stay with vBulletin but here are the problems. It is still full of bugs, I can get the application I need built for it but it might need to be repaired over and over again, refactoring is going to take at least a year. They will not give to owners a roadmap to development so we are not able to make long range plans. There is a ton of unknowns in trying to wait it out and things are going to be very time consuming.
We can return to SMF, we had more active users on SMF than we have ever had on vB4. In order to get time management under control I will have to get a couple of applications custom built. That is familiar ground to the long term members.
We can go to IPB3, IPB is developing an application that might be ideal and might solve the problem of having to get custom work done. IPB is unfamiliar ground to many of the users out here. The negative I hear it is a bit of culture shock as things look and feel different but I also hear you get quickly used to it and many things are easier to do. I think it is nothing more than a lack of familitarity to it.
I have to decide something soon as things can’t keep working the way they are. I got to get an application built and hope for the best on vB or I have to start planning a move.
