KeymasterMy review on the Mini Tuff Lite knife from Cold Steel , purchased from the KnifeCenter Online .
The mini Tuff Lite series by Cold Steel comes in different sizes and options of blade style , and color. The review i will be offering is on the smallest Mini Tuff Lite in the Series with the plain 2″ blade .First lets start with the specifications on the Mini Tuff Lite.
- Blade Length 2″
- Blade Thickness 2.5 mm
- Overall Length 5″
- Hollow Ground Blade
- Weight 1.6 oz.
- Steel Japanese AUS 8A Stainless
- Handle 3″ Griv-EX
- Pocket clip Ambidextrous pocket clip Fixed
- Tri-Ad lock
First impressions on the knife is the size being the smallest of the series .
- Very small and discrete in size , and so lite you will forget its even there .
- to small to fit large sized hands like myself by just griping the handle in a standard way.
- the recession just behind where the thumb hole makes it ruff , and in discomfort in design when trying to open the knife one handed with thumb while gripping the knife.
- The fixed pocket clip is to short and makes it difficult to clip on the inside of pocket .
- the pocket clip design with retention is very strong it will eat up a pair of jeans quickly.
- there are more things to this knife as we continue this review that will impress you .
Lets do a quick size comparison to a small Altoids tin to show you its true size .
A picture of the fixed pocket clip to show how short it is and the design of the clip
Here is a side view to show you what i mean about the design that makes it a jean eater
OK enough of being a critic lets talk about some of the good things that this Mini Tuff Lite offers .
- First the ergonomics in design of the blade with similarity’s to the warcliffe blade design .
- Second the Jimping on top of the blade spine .
- finger groove or recession on the blade for comfort and fit .
With the design of the blade in relation to the warcliffe designs . this knife has great utility uses allowing you to do small job more efficiently . At 2″ you can really make lite work of small cutting jobs . How often do we only use only 2 ” of the blade , and not the excess of the remaining edge on a knife blade . Hey that’s less sharpening that we have to do , so that’s an advantage .
Picture with the jimping on the blade spine .
This Jimping on the blade spine seems more like decorations than actual function . Why let me explain while i was griping this knife the jimping is to large , and spaced to fart apart to really allow extra grip . If the Jimping was smaller ,and closer together simlilar to grooves in a file than we would have something more sufficient . But i do like it though seems to give it a unique look for a budget blade.
Now here is a picture of the finger groove that makes this knife special
This is where the knife shows its true character with the finger groove allowing the user an extension of grip on the short handle . Cold steel came through on this creative add on with the handle being so short . You can really get a good grip by using this groove for the finger to choke up on the handle . I really like this function of design . Take a look at how well it fits my hand in the pictures below .
Now we are coming to the end of this knife review to discuss the two remaining features of this knife.
- Midway lockback design
- The Tri-Ad locking system
Having a midway Lockback on this mini knife i think is great for two reasons . One being the size of the knife , it makes it a little more safer in my opinion after handling it for awhile . Two it makes you slow down and properly disengage the blade through the lock . I couldn’t see this knife being a liner lock at any time for those reasons .
Now one of the best features of this little Mini Tuff Lite the Tri-Ad lock . I will simple explain this by quoting Cold Steel info on there website cause i don’t want to mislead anyone .
The “Stop Pin”…
The cornerstone of the Tri-Ad’s™ strength, among other subtle refinements, is the inclusion of a new “stop pin” which re-distributes the load of vertical positive and negative pressures on the lock.
The stop pin receives all positive pressure (pressure on the cutting edge) and transfers it into the handle frame and liners where it can be more effectively absorbed. There is more info available on cold steels Tri-Ad lock if you want to go check it out on there website . I am simply saying this so not to be misleading on an feature that in my on words i could really not fully understand . I am in noway affiliated with cold steel products . I just liked the look and descriptions of the Mini Tuff Lite and wanted to do review on the product for my fellow EDCF friends after seeing many reviews and videos on the product .
I hope y’all like the review I could say more about it , but that’s a quick rundown on the knife , I like to keep it simple . I really enjoyed reviewing this knife and the great price offered through the seller .
