KeymasterJust a few thoughts to ponder about concealed carry…
I recently went through a 3 day shooting class hosted by the Silent Warrior Scholarship Fund to raise money for fallen Recon Marines. In the class we did something interesting – scenario based drills where you drew your concealed carry weapon as you normally would carry it. I had never actually done this in a drill and my eyes were opened.
There were several scenarios, but they all went something like this; Bad guy comes up and does ________ or says he’s going to do _________ and you need to make a quick decision – comply with the bad buy, or draw your weapon. If the bad guy was closer than 25′ I couldn’t get my pistol drawn before he rushed me tackling me to the ground. I tried two different carries with a SW Body Guard strong side front, IWB and Colt Defender strong side on the belt with a thumb break style leather holster and got my butt kicked each time. Now mind you that I don’t dress like my dad in jeans, tucked in shirt and a vest everywhere I go so my clothes didn’t help me out. Lifting up a sweatshirt and t-shirt to gain access to my pistol was more difficult than I would have thought.
The other scenario worth mentioning goes like this; You’re in the grocery store not paying attention (lets say you’re comparing fat content in salad dressing) when the bad guy sees you printing and goes for your weapon. There were some key techniques here that ensured you stayed in control of your weapon. With them, I stayed in control. With out them I got shot.
I would strongly encourage anyone who daily carries to seek out a class such as this that is taught by strongly credentialed persons. If you’ve taken a class before, practice what you’ve learned with your friends. These skills are perishable and may be rotton when you really need to use them.
