do beads serve a purpose?

I’m new to EDC and the forum so pardon my ignorance. I can’t seem to figure out the whole bead thing. Is it to add weight to the para cord? And if so, isn’t one of the main points of EDC to eliminate weight? And shouldn’t these serve a purpose like being a lug nut or something you may need? Often I only see beads that look cool like blown glass and what not.
