Technically, these are “Presidential Memoranda”, but they have pretty much the same force. A summary of orders signed today and posted on the White House website:
1. Federal law enforcement agencies shall ensure that all firearms recovered after the date of this memorandum in the course of criminal investigations and taken into Federal custody are traced through ATF at the earliest time practicable. (Perhaps there has been some sloppiness in this regard in the past?)
2. The Secretary of Health and Human Services, through the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other scientific agencies within the Department of Health and Human Services, shall conduct or sponsor research into the causes of gun violence and the ways to prevent it. (Apparently a previous administration had forbidden this research.)
3. various instructions for improved records sharing from a lot of federal agencies to NICS. (No surprise if you already think the government has been doing this. Big surprise that they weren’t already. Maybe I’m a cynic.)
