As it relates to EDC, what is your favorite portable video game system?
I much like my Game Boy Advance SP. I like the “laptop” design, the long battery life (long enough to be used for several days of playing without needing recharging), compatibility with original-format Game Boy games (and the ability to play them in a wider-screen format), compact size, the ability to turn the light off to conserve battery life, and low battery indication. The only things I don’t like about it are the lack of a standard headphone jack (but there is an adapter available that allows using standard headphones while charging), and that it can seem a little too thin while gripping (a fair trade-off for the compactness, though).
The DS Lite may be even better, though. I thought the screen on the SP was nice (my SP is an older one that came out before the one with the improved screen), but the DS Lite’s screen looks quite a bit better. The DS Lite also has long battery life, a standard headphone jack, stereo speakers, fits into a pocket nicely, and the microphone and touchscreen add some innovation. If it played the original-format Game Boy games it would definitely be the ultimate portable IMO.
Both systems have great software libraries, too.
