Seems like every year or so I need to relearn this lesson.
Most of us here in US (aka the ‘lower 48’) are aware of the massive and unseasonal sub normal temperatures of the past week.
Like most folks I leave my garage door opener remote in my car pretty much 24/7/365.
Well, over the last few days my remote became extremely cranky… Since my prime entry to the house is the garage this was not a good thing. Once I got into the house and let the remote warm up a bit it was behaving more or less OK.
I’ve had this happen in the past; usually in winter I stop leaving the remote in the car but rather let it ride in my coat pocket. I’d forgotten.
And no, keeping an extra cell in the car I don’t think is a solution; it would just react to the cold. Duh!

On the other hand, here in Northern Virginia we’ve never had to deal with the power company PURPOSELY doing a blackout to avoid forest fires….

Yea, that’s crazy about shutting off power. Thankfully it has only been PG&E so far. I get my juice from SoCal Edison, and they haven’t adopted that policy. Yet…
Same with gate remotes. Luckily there’s always the keypad for the gate entry.

Wish I had a keypad. These garage door openers were apparently installed before keypads were known…

Maybe. But we’re not planning to upgrade anything on this place – getting the house ready for selling so we can downsize… my existing garage hardware is clearly aged so I suspect integrating a keypad would cost a bit.

Moshe,the button inside the garage is likely just a simple set of contacts that close to activate the door cycle and an outside KP is a pretty standard and universal device.

Not at all. Perhaps you’re thinking about a wired keypad remote? If you’re garage door opener functions with a remote, then a wireless keypad is a cheap and easy install. But the thing is, it’s actually outside all the time too. Here in Nebraska, my outdoor wireless keypad has never failed to function unless the batteries are wearing down, so I think its possible that you’re batteries are wearing down. When was the last time you replaced the battery?Hell you could use a key entry for that door as well. Uses two contacts and a tubular style key. Cheap ace hardware stuff. And adds utility too.

Yeah, I SHOULD be able to use key entries on the overhead doors… except that not one of the keys we have from the previous owner fits the locks on the overhead doors… never really gave it much thought. Duh. Need to get a locksmith; and not just for the overhead doors. Main lock to the house also seems pretty messed up. We never really use it — just via the garage.kikaida said: ↑

Yeah, I think the battery has worn down. And I recognize that if it were a wireless keypad it would be just as susceptible to the weather so I doubt I’d want to go that route.L’chaim to all!
