Bias statement for today’s review – I kinda don’t think much of Gerber. Buuuuut I thought the GDC line kinda looked cool and I think I fell victim to Gerber’s marketing prowess in the end. The GDC Money clip gets points for being a good idea, looking pretty cool, and more or less functioning as a money clip. The blade itself would make a nice compliment to anyone’s folder as a beater, mundane task blade and it is discrete.

It looses points for being a little gimmicky imo to mask a mediocre product. Even though the packaging mentions cards, with just 3 cards and 4 bills in the clip, the button to release the knife is blocked and makes it difficult or impossible to remove it without moving said cards and cash out of the way. Inserting and removing the blade consists of a lot of metal on metal grinding which I expect is going to quickly cause wear (though remarkably it hasn’t on the blade itself). Just playing with it for a few minutes exposed some metal on the button. Rough edges on the money clip scratch cards. The 7CR17MOV steel is the big loser of the occasion. I’m not a steel snob, and most anything will do for me, but the edge was moderately sharp out of the box and the next day was rolled. It was never used to actually CUT anything and I suspect it rubs on the inside of the sheath.

I think this product would be better with a pry tool instead of a blade if for no other reason than the steel makes the knife useless. But I think it would improve the GDC Money clip in other ways. It could be smaller for strictly money clip duty which is about all it’s good for now. They could ditch the little safety tab that locks the blade in and re-purpose the whole unit as a card/cash holder without a “clip” at all.
