This has been out for a while but I never bothered to really look into it till someone posted about it on another board.

    http://www.google.com/intl/en_us/mobile/sms/

VERY useful if you don’t have unlimited mobile internet on your phone (or no internet at all on it) especially if you don’t pay extra for your SMS.

The movie listing option is rather neat. They send you back a numbered list of the movies out. You reply with the number and they send you the show times and theaters playing it.

I set my default destination as the nearest big city that I’m usually in since I don’t need most of the localized info in town.

For driving its obviously safer to use the Goog-411 service since driving doesn’t lend itself to texting very well.

After discovering this I went looking for other cool similar stuff and found a couple other gems.

sending the text “about subject” to 23907 where subject is whatever will return a text with a link to the wikipedia entry for the subject. This will require you to use your mobile internet but I’ve found the wiki pages are very low bandwidth and the direct linking is a heck of a lot faster than trying to navigate to it.

Google’s SMS service offers a price finder option but I found Frucall does the same thing (37811) so you can get more prices to compare to. They both allow you to send the UPC or ISBN instead of the product name which is nice for items available in lots of different colors/models/styles

I’ve been using My-cast weather for a while which is nice for when I go storm chasing (I like to take lightning pictures) as I can pull up the radar on the go and the lightning strikes for that matter. It updates very quickly which is nice.

I also ran across this http://qcontinuum.org/compass/ which I haven’t installed yet but looks interesting. I basically does the old trick of using watch hands and the position of the sun or moon to find north.

Anyone found any other useful tricks? Preferably free
