Would anyone have any experience/recommendations for a mid-range (~$200) hh field recorder? I’m thinking of picking one up, and have been perusing the market for awhile, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. In general, I’ve seen Tascam, Roland and Zoom. I plan to use the unit for audio diary and thoughts, etc that I want to preserve. I don’t want one of those mini/pocket-sized units. Growth room is important.

    any thought/ideas/etc are very welcome.

    thanks!

umm. If you have a smart phone most are able to take digital voice memos. Which you could then transfer to a computer for inclusion into an on-going diary etc.

I have a Zoom H1 which is great and pocket-sized, last for ages off one AA battery. I also have a H4N for work. Both are great, I also use my smartphone and the Audio Recorder Pro app, it all depends how often you are going to listen back to it and what the end use for the audio is.

I’ve been considering the Tascam DR-05x for recording small meetings.

Just to add to the pot…. we have a studio where I work, where training and marketing videos and such are produced. I spoke to a few individuals here and they all recommended Zoom. The manager of that dept has an H6, which looks wonderful but is a bit out of my price range for what I’m looking to do.

    just throwing that out there.

    thanks to everyone so far

My Iphone7+ voice recorder records pretty well, I’ve captured great horned Owls a ways off chatting up a storm with it. My voice is nothing for it.

I’m beginning to wonder. The Internet is a breeding ground for specialized forums. Examples are BladeForum (obviously for knives, duh!), BudgetLightForum (for flashlights …), watchuseek (watches of course).

Are there not any forums for cell phones? One would think there might be greater discussion on such regarding both diy and commercial servicing of phones, especially the higher end ones with multiple cameras?

    Just a random thought…

Batteries run out. It’s why I EDC an all-weather notebook and pen + pencils.

I bought a Zoom H4 a few weeks ago; it’s very well-designed. Still looking for a hard case that doesn’t cost a substantial percentage of the device itself.

Amazon has hard cases for the H4 for under $20. Harbor Freight has bigger hard cases that will take a dslr for under $20.

I’m using a Tascam DR-05. It’s been working great for me so far. I am a musician and I use it to record practice sessions, both solo and with groups. I record concerts once in a while, but I usually don’t bother because the bigger groups I play with often have professionals recording. I also have the cable I can use to connect the DR-05 to my dslr to use it instead of the camera’s built in mic though I haven’t tested that out much. Additionally, I use it to record ideas for songs, so I can listen back when I try to write it in a notation program.

I hadn’t really thought of getting a hard case for it. I’m using a large phone holster to carry it, but I usually carry the holster inside my Vanquest Envoy instead of belt carrying the holster.

    Water-Rat,

good thought re Harbor Freight. I’ll check them out later. Thanks.

The hard cases I saw on Amazon looked too cheaply-made, and many of the reviews were way less than stellar. And I didn’t want to spend close to $100 for the “official” Zoom case.
